It is estimated that over 70 million people use walking as their chose form of exercise.  Walking is the first thing a child will learn to do as soon as they can stand on their feet.  What is so special about walking?  After all, we do it all the time.  That is the point exactly!  Walking is a natural activity.  It is free, doesn’t require any special equipment and can be shared by the entire family.

The ancient Greeks had realized the importance of exercise. Hippocrates, the “father of Medicine” said “Walking is the man’s best medicine.”  Movement is extremely important for normal body function.  It is responsible for normal muscle tone, as well as metabolism and blood flow.  The more active you are, the more efficient the body is in creating energy and eliminating waste.

There are several health benefits to walking.  By walking, you will gain cardiovascular benefits and strengthen you heart and lungs.  You will increase your metabolism, burn fat, lose weight and tone your muscles.  You will increase bone density and decrease chances of Osteoporosis.  Walking will also reduce stress and alleviate tension.

So then, how do you turn a walk into a workout?  Well, first and foremost, before engaging in any exercise, consult your physician.  Then you may choose your activity.

Yes, Dr.Karen. I do agree to your point completely. Walking is the most natural way to keep our body fit and healthy. Initially I depended much on medicines and automated machines to recover from obesity problem. But regular long walk and practicing aerobatics really worked for me. The results are quite comprehensive. Thanks for your guidance.
